I Spent the Summer Wastin'

Hello there. It's been a strange summer. Some good, some bad. I've been trying to keep drawing, but haven't been posting here much. Trying to use tumblr more - if you have an inclination to see drawings from me more frequently you can follow me there.  http://onlyskincomics.tumblr.com/

I've been enjoying tumblr, it seems to work really well for the comics community. I'm trying to post there like twice a week or so with new sketches and peeks at some of the pages I'm working on.

I've been trying to get into drawing a new comic story lately - it should be a self-contained story about a movie director who is trying to create a movie about the Tower of Babel and an actor called in as a last second replacement for one of the leads. I'm weighing a few different ways of putting it out into the world right now. It should be "novella" length - about 60-70pp or so. Here's an image of some of the early pages:

And here's a few of the sketches I put on my tumblr:

Also, I had the honor of being the featured comic book over at the Slate Book Review this month. They put a short review of Only Skin up here. And I illustrated about nine drawings for this month's issue, which you can see here. Here's what it basically looks like:

Also, there have been a few nice reviews of Only Skin over the past month or two on Read About Comics and Indy Reader and Graphic Eye.

Also! We've officially signed contracts for a French edition of Only Skin from Rackham! Not sure when it will be out, but I am really excited to see that when it happens.

Okay, that's most of it. Trying to get back to work. I have a few comics shows I'm looking forward to in the fall: I'll be at SPX in about 6 weeks and then Short Run in Seattle in early November and then BCGF in mid-November. I'll definitely have some new prints for those shows, an interview zine I did with Malachi Ward that's coming out through Oily Comics hopefully and also maybe something from that new comic I'm working on.

TCAF and Heading for Blue Ocean

(Leon Avelino behind the Secret Acres table at TCAF, photo courtesy Mike Dawson)

TCAF was excellent. My second trip to the show was even better than the first. It's quickly moving into a tie with SPX as my favorite comics show for a variety of reasons. The diversity of people showing there, the diversity of the people shopping there, the beautiful venue, the organization of the show, the responsiveness and general awesomeness of the volunteers, the easy vibe of Toronto in Spring, and of course it's the homeland of the generous and wonderful publisher Annie Koyama. The show has tons going for it. The stark contrast between everything TCAF is and everything MoCCA isn't probably added to that feeling. I could get into that in more detail, but I'm sure others will carry that flag and trying to help MoCCA pay attention to what other shows do better seems pretty futile at this point. They're doing great if you ask them. Okay.

What Leon (one of the publishers of Secret Acres) and I came back to a few times was that variety of both exhibitors and visitors at TCAF. We could not pin down any kind of demographic of people buying things - there was a mix of seeming first-timers, comic show vets, artists and all sorts of in-betweens. This of course happens at some other shows, but it seemed especially pronounced at TCAF. I mentioned this and it led Leon to bring up Nintendo's strategy behind the Wii - they said they weren't going to get into the whole video game battlefield with PS3 and XBox because the water was too bloodied and they'd head for blue ocean. The Wii was meant to be a gaming system for a new kind of customer. Don't tread the same water that's been tread and bloodied before, don't fight for the same dollar, etc - look for new water, aka open blue ocean, and new fans/customers. (This is apparently a whole big thing.) I don't think Leon meant to imply any intention of leaving current comics fans behind or anything, but the idea was to do different stuff and present it in a way that can stretch the expectations of current fans and, importantly, attract new fans. TCAF is the kind of show that perfectly sets up publishers and artists to do that - it supports that experience and experimentation by the customer in every way possible. There's no cover charge - you can wander in and browse! It's in a beautiful library - not some dank and/or scary outpost! Etc... I could go on and on, but everyone who knows TCAF knows it is great.

But I've been thinking about this whole Blue Ocean idea ever since our car ride back and I think that while it's a great publishing model, it's also something I love about comics in general. The potential to head for blue ocean in this medium is so big. The potential to do stories that have never been done before in ways that have never been seen or done is massive. There are so many cartoonists already doing this - already heading out to blue ocean at breakneck speed. And it's inspiring as shit. I could name names, but I don't want to miss anyone. So many of my friends and the cartoonists I admire do this on a regular basis.

While it's impossible not to feel run down by the Jack Kirby story, the Gary Friedrich story, Before Watchmen and all the bloody crap from the shitty history (and present!) of the superhero comics industry, it's hard to stay down on the potential of the medium of comics to head for uncharted territory. And it's hard not to get excited about stretching the expectations of people who already read comics and reaching new people who don't normally read comics. Blue Ocean.

Of course, this all felt like a major epiphany for the past few days and then I realized it's essentially the message of Hicksville (one of my favorite comics of all-time) all over again. But that's okay, Mr. Horrocks knew what he was talking about. It takes something like visiting TCAF to crystalize these things sometimes.

And, yes, I'm still high from last weekend. Sorry. Thank you to everyone who made it great.

Only Skin Collection: This Weekend

Hello.

This weekend the collected edition of Only Skin comes out. I've been working on this book for just about five years, so it kind of feels like I am sending a kid off to college. Or kindergarten, at least. I'm happy with how it came out.

The book will be at the Secret Acres table at MoCCA Art Fest. Then the following weekend at TCAF. I'll also be at MECAF and CAKE and SPX later in the year, and maybe another show or two, if I can swing it. You can order the book directly from Secret Acres, or from Amazon, or ask your comic book store to order it and buy it from them. But you know all that. I'm just happy to be able to say it's out finally.

The book is the same size as the issues, actually slightly bigger at 8.5" x 11". There are over 40 completely new pages and probably another 60 pages that were re-drawn for the collection. There are some pretty major edits and changes, but I think the story is stronger. It wasn't my intention to change it so much, but I think that's just the nature of how the book developed. I thought the corrections and new pages would take me two months and it took me about eight months. Anyway. It's done and it's coming out this weekend.

Here are some pictures...

Oh, oh, also, there is a book release party at Bergen Street Comics on Saturday April 28th at 8pm. It's cheaper than MoCCA and will probably have more alcohol and music. Here's the poster for that.

Okay, after all this I am really starting a new comic. I have a few projects cooking that I will probably talk about more in a few months. I'm excited about them though.

Sundays Five will be at MoCCA and TCAF

Sundays Five will debut at MoCCA Art Fest on Saturday. We'll be at the Secret Acres table (M10). We're really excited about this book. It is 8" x 7" landscape format, 150 pages. There are 24 artists in it and everyone involved did a great job. We will also be at TCAF the week after MoCCA. Also MECAF in Maine and then the first year of CAKE in Chicago. Come on out to see us. Here are some previews.

 Matt Wiegle's story

 Michael DeForge's story

 Brendan Leech's story

And again, there are 24 artists total in the book - I don't want to give away everything... though there are more previews over on the Sundays Five tumblr.

Sundays co-editor Chuck Forsman also made this great flip-thru trailer for the book:

See you at the comics shows!

Only Skin - Comic Shows and Book Releases

Only Skin Bergen St Comics Release Party Poster

Hello, there.

I thought I'd make a post about the upcoming events I'll be going to this spring as Only Skin: The Collected Edition is released into the world. Above is the poster I made for the Bergen Street Comics release party we're working on. It is meant to be a sort of nod to those painted Star Wars movie posters (This one in particular). I am also working on another poster for the book to take with me to all these shows.

Anyway, here is the full list:
  • Sunday, April 8th - KGB Bar Reading w/ Leela Corman, Jon Lewis and Ellen Lindner
  • Saturday/Sunday, May 5th/6th - TCAF
  • Sunday, May 20th - MECAF
  • Saturday/Sunday, June 16th/17th - CAKE

I'm also planning/hoping to go to PAC in Philly, SPX, MIX in Minnie and BCGF to round out the year. Should be a busy year.

We'll also have more info very shortly on Sundays 5, a new edition of the Sundays anthology that I'm editing that is coming along nicely. I hope to have copies with me for those comics shows mentioned above. This is a great looking book and I'm really excited about it. More info on that to come ASAP.

Hope to see you this year!

Only Skin Sample Book

Here are some shots of the Only Skin Collected Edition sample book. We're going to be tweaking the colors a little bit, probably taking out a little of the magenta. The book will be out at MoCCA and hopefully we'll have more info about a potential book release party that weekend that's starting to come together. It's exciting to hold the book.

Boo

This is a balloon for Only Skin. They will be made in limited quantity, probably, and will be at the book release party and stuff, hopefully. More info to come on the book release party soon.

Also, more info to come on an exciting anthology develop of the Sundays variety soon, too.
